In studies posted on a blog/forum called the Daedalus Project, there are many types of statistics being studied and published about MMORPGs. The main game that Daedalus project studied was World of Warcraft (WoW). Daedalus’ studies are now on hold and they will no longer be posting studies on WoW until further notice. They are however collecting data from realms in the North American/Oceanic and Hong Kong/Taiwan servers in preparation for further data analysis in the future.

Some of their research reflects the following:

Population tends to be made of younger males (12-28) and older females (23-40)

Players spend about half as much time researching game-related things as they do actually playing the game

Considering the numbers of people surveyed, there were about 5 times many males as females–this may be just that females did not want to respond to the survey.

There seems to be a wide variety of classes, races, and occupations in game, regardless of gender in game or out of game

Most people found the game on their own or were referred by a friend, although as many females as were referred by a friend were referred by a romantic partner.

There also seems to be a fairly steady rate of member increase, with exception of release date and release of major expansion packs

Some members will create new characters when their main one gets to the level cap so that they can continue to progress

All of these factors should be studied so that game makers can view these statistics and make a better game altogether. Also, these statistics are similar to some of the studies done on humans in real life such as gender, race, and income on a census sheet. Many of these statistics can easily be found or computed by scraping data from servers. Doing such a task is not difficult, time-consuming, or expensive–so why worry about it.

I find all of this information provided by the Daedalus Project to be very interesting, and also to be beneficial for those playing the game, so they may know the type of people they are ACTUALLY playing with as well as the general habits of those they play with.

This topic seems to make even me a bit uneasy. Currently being tested, there is a system being implemented that allows law enforcement teams to track and pinpoint vehicles that are speeding… FROM SATELLITE! There are claims being made that the system can read plates in any lighting and in any weather. The system will have speed limit data from every road listed in it and will monitor the amount of time that it takes a vehicle to get from point A to point B. This will be a new way to track and a much more effective way since it no longer requires a line of sight for the radar to be able to track the vehicle in question.

Not only did the district install specialized software that allowed them to know what the students were using the machines for and take screen shots of their conversations, but the district was also spying on the students via the webcam. This is obviously a huge invasion of privacy considering these laptops were used in many students’ bedroom. I couldn’t find what legal actions have been taken yet, probably because this is still making its way through the justice system.

It seems kind of silly that some of the same stuff we played with as kids can help us to boost a technology as complex as a wifi signal for internet access, but here’s how to actually do it.

This article explains why the famed Hitler parodies were removed from youtube. Basically what Youtube has come to say is that they use an automated content filter in order to track and detect copyrighted material and remove it from their site. They still have the video and can quite readily re-enable it, but you must file an appeal to prove that the material you have posted is allowed to be posted online via fair use regulations.

Youtube would rather wrongly pull something that is allowed to be posted than allow everything to be posted and be sued by the content owner for copyright infringement.

Many of us are comic book fans, but few will ever be able to experience the weird gadgets or technologies invented in said books. It appears that scientists are attempting to perfect a robotic arm similar to that of Doc Oc in Spiderman comic books. The main purpose behind such a bizarre prototype is to allow for more control over how certain human surgeries are executed and how the body parts involved in these procedures are handled. For example, a brain being handled by human hands or previous surgical robots may be handled a lot more gently by this new robotic arm.

So maybe not quite the same purpose as in the comic books or the movies, but still to aid in field of science.

A local principal thinks that students need not be part of a social networking site at all. In this article he argues that not only is the internet a dangerous place for kids to go onto, but that kids help to make it that way. Children and young teens are generally not very good at knowing and realizing when a name is OK to call someone or how many buttons you can push before you have pushed too many. Also, these same children are not developed enough emotionally to be able to handle the stresses that may come with having an online social network.

It seems as though the Senior Bowling League of senior citizens competing in Wii Bowling is a successful way to keep senior citizens nationwide in a competitive mindset. By playing with a Wii as assistive technology, older people can keep competing without the stress and weight on their joints. The bowlers compete in a league for a while and then enter a 64 team play-off bracket.

During the bracket, the teams will be challenged by other seniors all over the nation. This is made possible due to Skype chats in the video rooms that each team is participating in. The use of Skype keeps the need to travel at zero and also permits the friends of the bowlers to watch and cheer without traveling as well.

I hope fun things like this are around when I’m a senior citizen.
